Istanbul University Central Library Project

Bringing Turkey’s First University Library into the Digital Future

The Istanbul University Central Library, Turkey’s first university library, is also one of the most important institutions among the nation’s Legal Deposit Libraries.
This large-scale project set a precedent in its field through its scope, technical execution, and comprehensive methodology.

Within the project scope:

  • Complete automation-based catalog entries were created for all books.

  • All newspaper and journal collections were fully cataloged.

  • All theses were entered into the system with complete bibliographic details.

  • Each item was labeled with three barcode tags and a magnetic security strip.

  • As part of the library’s reconstruction process, relocation and packaging operations were carried out.

  • Each box received barcode labels, acid-free archival boxes were custom-produced, and item lists were placed inside every box.

  • All materials were cross-referenced with the digital cataloging system.

Through this massive project, Istanbul University’s Deposit Library has evolved into a modern information center, ensuring that literary and artistic works are preserved and passed on to future generations.
